Apricity - Appreciating Winter Sun
As much as I love sunbathing by the pool, there is something special about lounging in my garden bundled up in sweats, face tilted up toward the sun during the colder months. Apricity is the act of appreciating the sun in the winter. During the colder and darker months, when seasonal affective disorder, a depression that typically is experienced in late autumn and winter when the days are the shortest and darkest, appreciating the sun is a healing act.
5 Reasons to Enjoy the Winter Sun
Boosts "happy" hormones: Exposure to sunlight triggers the production of serotonin, “the happy hormone”. Lower levels of serotonin are associated with irritability and depression.
Regulates sleep cycles: Sunlight helps regulate the body's internal clock, or circadian rhythm and improves sleep quality by influencing the production of melatonin, the hormone that promotes sleep.
Promotes vitamin D production: The body synthesizes vitamin D when skin is exposed to sunlight. Adequate vitamin D levels are linked to reduced risks of depression and improved cognitive function.
Reduces stress: Spending time in natural light, particularly outdoors, can lower stress hormone levels, like cortisol, and promote relaxation.
Connects you with nature: Sunlight is often experienced in natural settings, and spending time in nature has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
